Marie has imported a couple of puppies from the US and Finland. They are:
HANISHAN DO DOUBT OF MARIKATE (Zizu)
ZAHLEKA HALLOWEEN QUEEN OF MARIKATE (Sila)
I’ve added a whole bunch of pictures to flickr as usual. More details on Marie’s website.

I have been very lax lately and this page hasn’t been updated in ages. I got to see the puppies a few weekends back while they were on show. It was really amazing to see that even though they were with us for only 9 weeks, they still remember us! I also need to add a presentation on Basenji breed standards that Cheryl gave while she was in South Africa. I’ll do that as soon as I get it.
On a more entertaining note, I was sent this Basenji Dance page link (I’ve seen it before, but it is still fun). It of course is a Basenji version of the old Hamster Dance
Some pics of the little girl (not the greatest pictures, but they’ll do).
I’ve added additional fanconi information. You also might want to consider this Basenji Owner’s Manual.
Kuta had a nasty dewclaw injury yesterday. Looks like the nail snapped off completely, leaving just a red nub of what seems to be painful inner nerves. I cleaned it up and there seems to be no other damage. She’s licking at it and yelps every now and again from the pain. From what I can gather (and a day later it seems true) the nail layer will start growing over the nub.
This incident led me into googling for dewclaw injuries and I ended up with all sorts of online debates about docking tails and removing dewclaws. I was asked abut it with the puppies last year, but I decided not to. I think they are there for some reason and if it does become a chronic injury with Kuta, then I’ll consider surgery.
At least Kuta seems fine, but I’ll keep an eye on things. I’ve added some older photos too
I’ve added a guide to the treatment of Fanconi Syndrome which is invaluable for owners and vets. Basenjis are susceptible to fanconi and early diagnosis is important. Download the Fanconi Syndrome Protocol (Adobe PDF 160kb).
I’ve added a new and (as always when dealing with breed standards) potentially controversial article about the state of the breed. Some interesting comments from Marie Knight in the text. You’ll find it on the Nature’s Masterpiece page.
Marie Knight has launched her website for Marikate Basenjis and Dobermanns. Please visit Marikate Dobermanns & Basenjis. Both my two were from a litter Marie bred and she continues to do a great deal to support the breed in South Africa.
Just took a holiday in Paternoster up the West Coast for a few days. This is the first time they’ve been to the beach since they were puppies. They had lots of fun hunting the birds on the beach. Much to their frustration the birds kept going deeper into the water and you know how much Basenjis like water
As usual pictures up on my flickr page.
